How much would your customers like an autonomous data center, one in which over 85% of issues get resolved automatically — even before they know there’s been a problem?

That’s what Hewlett Packard Enterprise is promising with its new cloud-based AI platform, HPE InfoSight. InfoSight is an AI recommendation engine for the data center that uses machine learning to predict and prevent problems.

As if that weren’t cool enough, HPE also says InfoSight can lower storage operating expenses by nearly 80%.

HPE claims to be the only supplier now offering this capability. That’s thanks to the company’s $1 billion acquisition of Nimble Software, completed this past April. Nimble, founded in 2007 and based in Silicon Valley, is a provider of all-flash and hybrid-flash predictive storage solutions.

As of now, HPE plans to offer InfoSight in 2 versions:

> HPE InfoSight with the new AI recommendation engine. This version will be available in January. For HPE Nimble Storage customers with active support contracts, it will be offered at no additional charge.

> HPE InfoSight for 3PAR, the company’s all-flash data storage arrays. This version will also be available January. And for 3PAR customers with active support contracts, it will also be offered at no additional charge.

“As applications increasingly drive today’s businesses, we need to help customers move toward a self-managing IT model,” said Bill Philbin, an HPE senior VP and its GM of storage. “HPE InfoSight enables IT to spend more time on projects that add value to the business, rather than on troubleshooting issues.”

Behind the scenes

Here’s how HPE InfoSight works:

1) InfoSight continually collects data from thousands of embedded sensors built into every system.

2) Then, using AI and machine learning, InfoSight predicts and prevents problems. Over time, it should get smarter and more reliable by collecting and correlating data from millions of sensors.

3) Over time, the solution’s preemptive recommendations help IT staff to make intelligent decisions and improve their tech environment

Impressive, right? Michael Goldstein, CEO of LAN Infotech, a solution provider in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., agrees. Here’s some of what he told CRN: “This is a big deal. It gives channel partners as well as storage administrators a bird’s-eye view of what needs to be done.”
